"The Gina McReynolds Foundation was so loving and kind. They get to know each family individually, then determine what is their greatest need. For us they helped with our bills, it was such a blessing!"

shelbyShe thought it was mastitis.

Shelby Reynolds, 34, had two daughters—Tatum, 3, and her baby girl, Kai, who was almost one. But after nearly a year of breastfeeding, the lump she thought was just an infection wasn’t going away. At an OB/GYN checkup she requested a mammogram and before she knew it she was given the cruelest of April Fool’s jokes.

Just five days before her 35th birthday on April 1, 2013, her doctor told her it wasn’t mastitis. It was cancer.

Reeling from the diagnosis, her and her husband planned their attack. A double mastectomy with double latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction. Chemo. Radiation. Hormone Therapy. If it was available, Shelby would have it. But all of those treatments came at a cost and those bills were adding up.

“My work was really supportive. They helped me by donating vacation hours for my recovery, making and taking us meals, assisting with fundraisers, and they even purchased a plane ticket for my mom to fly to Florida to help take care of me and my two little kids,” she said. “They even brought me balloons to the chemo center on my last chemo treatment. A dozen pink balloons of course!”

But there was still daily radiation for six weeks and another surgery to complete and the length of time for her recovery was taking a lot longer than she hoped.

“Even with all the support from work I eventually had to take disability. My medical bills were larger than the value of my house!”

And that’s when the Gina McReynolds Foundation stepped in.

Shelby had heard of the foundation through a friend and neighbor, but in a twist of fate, Will from the foundation had just finished reading a story about her in the Apopka Chief and Planter at the exact time.

Without hesitation he talked with his team and wanted to get in touch with Shelby and find out how they could help.

“The Gina McReynolds Foundation was so loving and kind. They get to know each family individually, then determine what is their greatest need. For us they helped with our bills,” she said. “It was such a blessing!”
